Gallery: Inside and out as the fabulous Isle of Vaila goes up for sale

The Isle of Vaila has gone on sale for £1.75 million and includes a number of properties and amenities for that price tag, as well as gardens, grazing and heathland.

With around 6.5 miles of coastline, Vaila encompasses cliffs, rocky outcrops, caves and pebble beaches.

This striking location, once home to Norwegian Viking chiefs, also boasts a magnificent 17th Century mansion house.

Vaila Hall was developed from a laird’s house into a grand summer residence in the 19th Century and by the early 20th Century, lavish house parties were being held there.

Also on Vaila is the three-bedroom Arts and Crafts farmhouse built in 1894 which has a byre known as The Whale House where the skeleton of a 42ft-whale lies after it was beached on the island in 2000.

The Isle of Vaila extends to approximately 757 acres (306 ha) in total.
There is a series of three walled gardens featuring Shetland flora, along with two former kitchen gardens.
Vaila has been inhabited for thousands of years and by about 1450, a number of Norwegian landowners held major estates in Shetland, based on the isles of Papa Stour, Noss and Vaila.
The first decade of the 20th Century saw parties at Vaila Hall and in 1901 some 30 people were working on the island.
Ham Pier on the island is an excellent facility offering transport and leisure options.
The gardens at Vaila; its micro-climate has been able to produce an abundance of plants including rosa ragosa, fuchsia, euphorbia and hosta.
Situated in an elevated position to the north, the mansion is a prominent landmark on approach to the island.

Vaila and its clean, clear and sheltered waters provide ideal conditions for yachting and watersports.
