Heaven on earth: This converted church could be your new spiritual home for £540k

This converted church is stunning both inside and outside.
This converted church is stunning both inside and outside.

Looking at before and after photos of The Auld Kirk, one could be forgiven for thinking an “interior divine” intervention has taken place.

Celestial in every sense of the word, this five-bedroom former church in the village of Sauchen has been restored to its former – and future glory – by Pauline Duncan and her husband George.

Since moving into the property 10 years ago, the couple, who live with their sons Kieran and Ross, have put their heart and soul into creating a gloriously sublime family home.

From the stunning family galleried area and the striking staircase to the exquisite lounge and dressing room, every inch of this home is worthy of the highest praise.

Before: This is what The Auld Kirk looked like before Pauline Duncan and her husband George renovated the entire property from top to bottom.
After: Pauline Duncan and her husband George put their magic touch on the property.

“My husband viewed the property and fell in love with it.,” says Pauline.

“It has to be said, I didn’t feel the same then as I do now since we have changed the property decor and upgraded throughout.”

1844

Built in 1844 and known as the Chapel of Linton for many years, the church was first converted about 25 years before the Duncan family bought it from a young family 10 year ago.

With considerably dated decor, the couple had their work cut out when they set about making improvements.

Family home: Pauline’s son Kieran pictured relaxing in their pretty back garden.

“We have changed the decor throughout apart from the upstairs lounge carpet and main bathroom shower,” says Pauline.

From top to bottom, the couple have breathed new life into the historic property upgrading everything from the lighting and kitchen to the guest bedroom with ensuite and the garden.

Before: This photo shows the kitchen before Pauline and George fully renovated it.
After: Eating breakfast is a stylish affair in the renovated kitchen.

“We also renovated the lounge which included installing an integrated wood stove and we raised the floor and created a lovely dining area with subtle lighting,” says Pauline.

“We also removed the original AGA oven and upgraded to a Rangemaster oven which includes a proving drawer (a compartment with a limited temperature range that helps dough rise properly) for all that nice homemade bread.”

Full refurbishment

Not stopping there, the couple also installed a biomass pellet heating and hot water system last year before turning their attention to the garden.

“We have done a tremendous amount of work in the garden removing some trees and creating a beautiful garden and patio area, added a large summerhouse to the front of the garden which is approximately the size of a double garage and can be used as a summerhouse or garage type area,” says Pauline.

“We have added lighting to enhance the look of the building at the front and also added fairy lights to the trees at the front – I love a fairy light.”

Fine dining: This elegant dining area is made for sophisticated soirees.
Fashion forward: The dressing area is the height of luxury.

Five bedrooms

On the ground floor there is an exquisite lounge and dining area, an inner hall with great built-in storage which gives access to three large double bedrooms, a family bathroom and the breathtaking dining kitchen.

A concealed spiral staircase leads up to the galleried family area overlooking the lounge which provides access to a stunning dressing room and the elegant master bedroom.

The master bedroom is particularly impressive with his and her built-in wardrobes, an ensuite bathroom and double doors that open to the Juliette balcony overlooking the dining area.

Sweet dreams: Wake up feeling refreshed and raring to go after a good night’s sleep in the charming bedroom.
Cosy chic: The bedrooms are all super stylish.

Excellent location

Asked what she’s enjoyed most about her home, Pauline says: “The space internally and externally, our beautiful garden, the tranquil surroundings and how we can turn left and reach town, Westhill or Inverurie after only a short journey and equally turn right from our drive and a short distance away we can be in Ballater etc.”

It’s the happy memories at The Auld Kirk that Pauline and her family will cherish forever.

“We’ve enjoyed many memorable parties over the years, including my husband’s 50th where we created a Vegas themed party which included roulette and card tables, a huge champagne and bubble balloon elevated from the balcony upstairs and a balloon arch at the front door – it was amazing,” says Pauline.

Stairway to heaven: The converted church is brimming with character.
Sacred sanctuary: The bathroom is the perfect place to relax after a hard day at work.

Home with heart

“Both my son’s have also had a couple of birthday celebrations including Halloween parties and we’ve enjoyed regular evening entertainment with friends and family.”

But it’s the Christmas memories that take up a special place in Pauline’s heart.

“Christmas has been amazing as we have hosted 16 guests comfortably,” says Pauline.

“The Christmas decorations at our home have always been amazing and anybody passing comments on how beautiful it is.”

Work from home: This modern home office is sure to inspire productivity.
Let there be light: This bedroom is particularly sumptuous.

Although sad to be moving as they prepare to downsize, Pauline and George are happy in the knowledge that The Auld Kirk is the perfect place for a new family to create special memories.

“I think the property would suit a young family or even a business as I think it would make an amazing coffee house/gift shop” says Pauline.

Asked what she’ll miss the most about her wonderful home, Pauline says: “I personally love my kitchen, dressing area and Christmas time at our home.”

Pretty garden: Family barbecues and parties can be hosted in the beautiful garden.
