With its bespoke bar, snooker room, summer house and sheltered barbecue area, it’s no surprise that this traditional yet contemporary farmhouse turned the heads of TV producers.
Home to Gail Wright, a self-confessed “lady of leisure” and her husband Iain Wright, a maintenance manager, the four-bedroom Oldmeldrum property played a starring role when the couple appeared on the Channel 4 show Come Dine With Me back in 2019.
“We ended up winning Come Dine With Me,” laughs Gail.
“Both the house and garden was shown during the programme.”
Enjoying a leafy location in the village of Oldmeldrum – just a 30-minute drive from Aberdeen – Greenspot Farmhouse perfectly blends old period features such as ceiling beams and exposed stone walls with modern touches namely the stylish kitchen/diner.
“It was the character of the property that first attracted us to the house especially its quirky features including two elegant staircases in the farmhouse, the man-cave and snooker room in the separate annex,” says Gail.
Dating back to the 1800s, the farmhouse has underwent a dramatic transformation over the years.
“The farmhouse originally was a working farm in 1800s for many years and was well known in the area,” says Gail.
“A large extension was built 30 years ago which now hosts the contemporary kitchen and living area.
“This area of the property creates a calming and attentive atmosphere which is perfect for social events and family occasions.”
Chic country kitchen
Postcard perfect on the outside, the charming farmhouse is even more impressive on the inside as an attractive porch leads straight through to a cosy snug.
Undoubtedly the beating heart of the home, the kitchen/diner is where mouthwatering meals and memories are created.
Overlooking the garden and the surrounding countryside, the kitchen features stylish cabinets, worktops and integrated appliances including a double oven.
Perfect for cooking and entertaining at the same time, the kitchen also has a centre island with storage space and an integrated induction hob.
“We’ve made significant improvements to make the home traditional but contemporary,” says Gail.
“So we’ve installed a state-of-the-art kitchen featuring marble granite worktops and sturdy farmhouse cupboards.
“The kitchen also features a convenient instant boiling water tap in the sink.”
Four sumptuous bedrooms
Also on the ground floor of the farmhouse is a lounge with a log-burning stove, a dining room, toilet, family room and a conservatory.
Upstairs, there is a master bedroom with en suite as well as three double bedrooms and a family bathroom.
The jewel in the crown of this wonderful home though is the separate annex – located in the garden – which features a bar, pool room, toilet and an open plan bedroom/lounge upstairs.
“We’ve created a 1920s style bar and snooker room which has been the centre of many memorable parties, including our son Christian’s 21st and 30th birthday parties.”
Sheltered barbecue area
Proving that staying in is the new going out, Gail and Iain have created their very own home pub featuring shelving and space for a fridge and drinks cooler.
Meanwhile, the pool room has a log-burning stove, bi-folding doors and a pool table (available by separate negotiation).
Further entertaining space can be found outside where there is a veranda and a barbecue shelter as well as a seating area with a firepit overlooking the pond and a hot tub (again available by separate negotiation).
There’s also a summer house with power, light and a log-burning stove.
“We’ve enjoyed the outdoor entertaining space with its decked areas and hot tub plus we also put in a luxurious summer house,” says Gail.
Pond and firepit
Parking is also taken care of as the home has a driveway just off the road which continues through the courtyard and to the other side of the property providing off-street parking for several cars.
Keen gardeners will also be in their element as there is an enclosed back garden with a large wooden greenhouse.
After seven blissfully happy years, Gail and Iain, who shared their home with their son and their four dogs, have reluctantly put their plush pad on the market as they embark on a new adventure.
“We’re seeking a new challenge and project either at home or abroad in Turkey,” says Gail.
Asked what she thinks will appeal most to buyers, Gail says: “The quirkiness and the large outside entertaining areas will appeal most to buyers as they’re a great selling point.
“This is something we will miss.”
Someone else who will also miss Gail’s incredible home is fellow Aberdonian Come Dine With Me contestant Becca Freestone, who is the Press and Journal’s social media manager.
“We were blown away by the grandeur of the house,” says Becca.
“It’s beautiful on the outside and inside, Gail has put an enormous amount of time and effort into making it an incredible home.
“Every single room has amazing wee details, it’s a seriously stylish property.
“The dining room in particular is incredible, it’s like something out of a showhome.”
Greenspot Farmhouse, Oldmeldrum, Inverurie, is on the market for offers over £499,000.
