Forget Nigella and Jamie, research released by retirement housebuilder, McCarthy and Stone, shows that when it comes to mealtimes and special celebrations, family recipes handed down from generation to generation are the go-to choice for families in Scotland, with 54% having a family favourite recipe in their collection.
To celebrate these cherished recipes, the housebuilder has created a series of recipe cards which, subject to availability can now be picked up from selected developments including the Beeches Gate, Craigeburn Park in Aberdeen.
Ten of the recipes have been created by members of the public with the 11th one is from Chetna Makan, semi-finalist on The Great British Bakeoff 2014, who has put forward her own personal favourite recipe for sour and spicy potatoes which was handed down to her from her mum.
Chetna said: “My Mum is the main reason I love cooking. All my knowledge of cooking and flavours comes from her and I have learned everything by just watching her cook. And now I want my kids to have the same experience with food as me. So I try and bake a lot with them and they are already becoming very keen little bakers themselves.”
Rosemary Giovino from the McCarthy & Stone, said: “We know from our homeowners that there’s a wealth of recipes out there that have been around for generations. Recipes may not be what you think of when researching your family tree, but they’re a vital part of family legacy. Far from these precious recipes being in danger of being lost, we want to capture the passion and enthusiasm that still exists for creating family food traditions, and celebrate some of the recipes being shared with us.”
