They’re bright, colourful and relatively small, and in some parts of the UK seen as objects of great desire.
But the proposal to build a selection of beach huts in Findhorn was met with some opposition when it was first suggested.
Some 175 letters of objection were submitted, but with no opposition to the proposal from either Scottish Natural Heritage, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency or Moray Council’s own development plans section, the plans to build the huts were approved.
Work is now underway to build the huts which will stand on timber piles to minimise the risk of flooding from unusually high tides. There are 30 huts available for sale in total and these are being released in two phases of 15.
Located close to the postcard-pretty village of Findhorn, Findhorn Beach is said to be one of the most popular beaches on the Moray coast.
The beach huts will be built on the north side of the beach just a short walk down the three paths leading from the car park and picnic areas. They will look over the sandy beach to the sea.
Measuring six feet by eight feet, each hut, priced at £25,000, will have a door to the front but no windows, electricity or water – a nearby toilet block will meet essential needs.
The huts, which have been engineer designed to be wind resistant, can be painted in a choice of five colours: yellow, red, cream, dark blue and light blue.
Once here, owners of the beach huts will have instant access to a magnificent coastline that provides miles of dunes and beach walks in a pleasant micro climate.
Wildlife is abundant in the area and can be frequently seen along the coastline, including seals at low tide on the sandbank of the mouth of the river Findhorn.
On the western end of the beach, there still lies an impressive line of concrete tank-traps from World War II, when there was the fear of Germans invading. Today, the invaders are more likely to be property hunters in search of an unusual beachside residence.
