Are you hoping to get started on a renovation project this spring?
Self-storage firm Flexistore has teamed up with Aberdeen’s Tinto Architecture to make sure you don’t miss these very important steps.
1. NOTIFY YOUR INSURANCE
This is all too often a forgotten step when you embark on a home renovation project, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.
Richard Tinto, owner of Tinto Architecture, said: “Notifying your home insurance provider is hugely important, as depending on the type of work you want to undertake, it could affect your policy.
“The best thing to do is call and run your anticipated work past them, as it may have to change for the duration of your project.”
2. ARRANGE ALTERNATIVE ACCOMMODATION
You may need to factor alternative accommodation into your renovation budget. During significant projects, there may be a period of a few weeks where your home is unliveable – imagine having no kitchen, bathroom or even roof.
3. STORAGE
Keep valuable items outside of your home as dust can get into all sorts of nooks and crannies during a revamp.
Mike Duthie, from Flexistore in Aberdeen, suggests: “Self storage
can be the perfect temporary and hassle-free solution during a renovation project.
“It allows you to keep your belongings out of harm’s way, and also
lets you make space for workmen, allowing your project to be completed quicker.”
4. PICK THE PERFECT TIME
Timing of a renovation project is critical and there’s no need to rush.
Depending on the nature of your project, there may be a time of the year that is most suited.
For example, if your roof needs to come off, summer is obviously much better as there is less chance of rain.
So to avoid delays and increased costs, be clever when planning the time of year to undertake your renovation.
5. FIND A DREAM TEAM
One hat does not fit all. To have a smooth and issue-free process, you must select the right people to undertake the right jobs, whether that is builders, designers or architects. Make sure you feel comfortable with those working on the project and that they understand your needs.
