Station House Media Unit (shmu) is often perceived as just a radio station (shmuFM), but the organisation has had a long history of success in many areas, building from the ground upwards since 2003.
Over the past 10 years the organisation has branched out from community film-making and added magazines, radio, music production, website-building, employability training, and working with offenders to their repertoire.
With a staff team of 15, 150 volunteers and over 70 trainees actively involved across the programmes of work on a weekly basis, the organisation has now firmly cemented its position at the forefront of community media in Scotland.
“We are undergoing a significant period of growth,” explained Murray Dawson, shmu’s chief executive.
“Despite the challenging nature of the economic climate, shmu have gone from strength to strength and we are in the process of recruiting four new members of staff, as featured in Aberdeen Journals’ ‘jobsmyway.co.uk’.
“In the past, we have tended to depend on securing grant funding to support our innovative programme of work,” continued Murray, “but the organisation is now looking to develop an income-generating arm and is seeking to appoint a funding and business development co-ordinator to lead on this exciting new area of work.
“With the launch of new initiatives such as corporate team-building days, where a team produces and presents a live radio show in just one day, and a commercial web-building arm offering a holistic service that will create websites featuring rich content including video and audio, the aim is for the organisation to gain a higher percentage of self-generated and sustainable income, with less dependence on grant funding.
“Our aim is to underpin our commercial arm with our deep-rooted ethical approach, developing high-quality services that are dynamic and innovative but affordable, especially, but not exclusively, for other third sector organisations. In this exciting period of growth, working with shmu will be an incredibly rewarding career move.”
