If you found Mercedes’ imposing G 63 AMG 6×6 a little too wild, the German car maker has now produced a more manageable alternative to its premium monster truck offering.
The basic recipe is the same – take a G Wagon and pump it full of steroids – but, at least with the firm’s G 500 4×4, it’ll be easier to park in town than its six-wheeled cousin.
As with the larger variant there’s no shortage of power on tap, with the G 500 4×4 using Mercedes’ new 4.0-litre AMG V8 motor tuned to output a healthy 422 horsepower. This G 500 rides on 22-inch wheels, and is clad in carbon fibre detachable body panels.
To ensure that the G 500 is equally at home away from the tarmac, the G 63 AMG 6×6 donates an amended version of the ruggedly determined permanent all-wheel-drive powertrain with portal axles. Also new is the chassis with dual spring/damper struts and adjustable damping. Finally, on the inside, the G 500 4×4 occupants enjoy comfort and an ambience on a par with a luxury saloon.
And while there’s no official word yet on whether this particular model will enter production, it didn’t take much persuasion for Mercedes to build a few examples of the G 63 AMG 6×6 variant after it was shown to the press. Just don’t expect much change from a Bentley-size hole in your pocket when it does get the green light.
