Porsche has revealed an electric supercar with a 300-mile range and the ability to recharge 80% of that in just 15 minutes – but company bosses are yet to decide whether to build it for real.
The Mission E concept packs two powerful electric motors that deliver a total of 600 horsepower, using technology derived from the firm’s Le Mans racing cars.
It is Porsche’s vision for a zero-emission sports car, using four-wheel drive and a new 800-volt battery charging system for shorter ‘refuelling’ stops – dubbed ‘Porsche Turbo Charging’ in a rare display of German humour.
While 80% can be replenished in just 15 minutes, the final 20% must be done more slowly to avoid damaging the batteries – a limitation faced by all plug-in electric cars.
At full throttle you can expect a 0-62mph sprint in ‘less than 3.5 seconds’ and a 0-124mph equivalent in no more than 12 seconds. To say the Mission E is rapid would be an understatement.
Advanced lightweight construction helps to keep the centre of gravity low, and there are plenty of token design cues taken mainly from the current 911 to placate Porsche die-hards terrified of a 911-less future.
The Mission E is on display right now at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
