You’d be forgiven for thinking that the only place to enjoy a spectacular St Patrick’s Day parade outside of Ireland would be New York. Trust me, it’s just as big a deal in Boston.
Almost a quarter of Boston’s population is of Irish descent and boy, do they know how to throw a party.
St Patrick’s day aside, Boston is a fabulous city to visit at any time of the year but it would be a shame to miss the city’s extravagant celebrations of you plan to visit next spring.
Boston is the largest city and the capital of the state of Massachusetts and is also one of America’s oldest cities.
This place is just steeped in history and packed with just about every cultural activity you could ever want on a city break.
Boston is also a food loving sports-mad hotspot but it’s teeming with museums and attractions to keep everyone amused so you’ll be sure to find something for everyone not just the beer lovers or the baseball fans!
Speaking of beer, some of you may remember the classic TV series, Cheers, back in the 80s.
Well, if you were a fan of Sam, Diane and Co, you’re in for a treat because you can visit the original Cheers bar on Beacon Hill, which was used as the inspiration for the much-loved programme, and no doubt you’ll make some new friends along the way.
Old meets new on the quaint and atmospheric streets as modern day skyscrapers blend with colonial buildings and its location in the heart of New England adds more than a touch of natural beauty.
Even if you are only here for a few days, there’s plenty you can pack in to really get to know this fascinating city.
Here are a few of my top things not to be missed if you visit Boston.
St Patrick’s Day Parade (March)
The famous St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Boston takes place on the Sunday closest to March 17th when the city bursts into life and a sea of green takes over.
Spectators can enjoy the colourful, pretty floats as well as fabulous Irish and American pipe and drum bands.
Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum
Do not miss this brilliant attraction. The multi media experience takes you on a journey through Boston’s history and the part it played in the story of America. Suitable for all ages, it’s a great day out.
Freedom Trail
A must do! This 2.5-mile route will take you through 16 historical sites — each one is significant too. Explore museums, churches, and burial grounds. On this walk, you will discover the rich history of Boston and it’s place in the American Revolution.
Baseball at Fenway Park
Sports fans won’t want to miss a game at Fenway Park, home to the Boston Red Sox. Even if you’re not a big baseball fan, the atmosphere is electric and worth going just for the experience. Most Bostonians are passionate Red Sox fans so if you plan on taking in a game during baseball season (April to October) it’s a good idea to book your tickets in advance
Martha’s Vineyard Day Trip
Enjoy a day trip to Martha’s Vineyard from your base in Boston. The drive to the ferry port in Falmouth takes around an hour and a half then it’s on to the Island Queen ferry and a short cruise across the waters of Vineyard Sound to Martha’s Vineyard. Don’t forget your camera!
New England Aquarium
Another great day out is to visit the impressive New England Aquarium, right in the heart of downtown Boston, where you will see its stunning collection of marine life. Hosting New England’s biggest screen, the aquarium’s IMAX Theatre will prove a hit too, as incredible underwater journeys come to life.
