Glasgow, there’s no place like it. From the hustle and bustle of the city centre to the phlegmatic atmosphere of the West End, a city break to Glasgow is always a pleasure, never a chore.
Whether it’s the nightlife, the art galleries or just some relaxation you’re after – there’s never a dull moment. Check out our guide to Glasgow below.
The People
Glasgow is made from its people. You can always count on a Glaswegian to make you laugh or help you out no matter how small or large the task at hand is. Voted one of the friendliest cities, it’s easy to see why people come to Glasgow for a day out, a short break or in some cases move there permanently.
Art Galleries & Museums
Glasgow is a city built on its rich culture and history. One of the best places to discover the city’s history is at Kelvingrove Art Gallery. Located in the heart of the West End, you can take in the breath-taking Salvador Dali’s Christ of St John of the Cross, the Charles Rennie Mackintosh gallery and an abundance of natural history including dinosaurs.
Across the road from Kelvingrove Art Gallery you have the Riverside Museum. Within its walls, you can discover over 3,000 objects from locomotives, vintage cars and skateboards that charts Glasgow’s vibrant past to the mid-20th century.
If you’re in the City Centre then the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) is well worth a visit. With different artists and exhibitions on, it’s a great place to spend some time. Located less than 20 minute walk from the GOMA is the Glasgow Art School, where you’ll see the innovative style of Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
Hidden Gems
Like any big city there are hidden gems to be found. Take the underground out to Byres Road and have a drink or some food in Ashton Lane. Then wander down Ruthven and Dowanside Lane, where you will find a selection of quirky shops, selling everything from antiques to comics, vinyl and vintage clothing.
The Lighthouse in Mitchell Lane (Just off Buchanan Street) is Scotland’s Centre for Design and Architecture. Steeped in history, (it was the first public commission completed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh) the Lighthouse offers spectacular views over the City Centre as well as exhibitions and workshops to keep you entertained.
If you are looking to head outdoors, then head to Glasgow’s Botanic Gardens. The gardens offer free tours as well as workshops and events for all the family. The most-talked about one coming up is the Jurassic Kingdom. So be sure to get along between August 26 & September 10 and witness the magnificent dinosaurs taking over the gardens.
One of the most magnificent jewels Glasgow has to offer is the Necropolis. Located to the east of Glasgow Cathedral, this Victorian cemetery sits on a low hill offering spectacular views over the city. The City of the Dead as it is known, spans 37 acres and is a resting place for over 50,000 residents from many faiths.
Fun fact about the Necropolis – it was designed by a landscape gardener rather than an architect.
Food & Drink
You will never be short of places to eat in Glasgow. Head to Merchant City and experience the exquisite Indian food of Dhakin and Dhabba. If it’s a show you’re after then Wild Cabaret offers comedy and live cabaret with your evening meal. Looking for a bit of pub grub or just a nice drink and a place to watch some live music then head to Blackfriars or 13th Note.
If it’s more cocktails, live music or a night out you’re after then Royal Exchange Square and Bath Street in the City Centre offer a variety of bars for you to peruse. From One Up in Royal Exchange Square to Howlin’ Wolf in Bath Street, you’ll be sure to find a bar or a restaurant that will suit your needs.
For something a bit different then make your way to the West End. The Grosvenor Cinema allows you the comfort of home with the big comfy sofas and a drink whilst watching the latest cinema release.
Shopping
Head to the Style Mile and shop til you drop! The Style Mile encompasses the shops on Buchanan Galleries, St Enoch Centre, Princes Square and Argyle Street. With over 200 stores to choose from featuring designer brands to independent boutiques, you’ll need an extra suitcase to take home with you.
For alternative or quirkier places to shop then the West End offers you another option. From vintage shops to charity shops, you’ll be sure to find a few gems on the rails.
