There is a host of reasons for visiting Tenerife, including walking in Tenerife, where you can experience wonderful nature and stunning scenery!
Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands, which the classicists rightly called – ‘the Fortunate Isles’. Fortunate too in having such a wonderful winter and spring climate for visitors from the freezing north! An island of contrasts, Tenerife provides miles of sun-drenched scenery and walking trails. It will give you a totally different insight into the island, compared to its more commercial resorts in the south.
Here are just three of the different walks and natural attractions you can discover in Tenerife.
Volcanic wonders of Mount Teide
Mount Teide’s 3,718-metre (12,200 feet) summit is the highest point in Spain and the highest point above sea level in the islands of the Atlantic.
A typical walk in this area takes around 3-4 hours, with a reasonably level route, a distance of 5-6 miles at an altitude of around 8000 ft.
This walk offers breath-taking views and gives the walker an opportunity to try something a bit different, or should we say – volcanic?
If you want all of the scenery with less of the walking there is also the option to take a cable car to the top. It offers the experience to glide over this geological gem, where craters and lava flow form impressive colours and shapes unique to this destination.
Nature immersion at Anaga Rural Park
Anaga is a rural park to the north-east of the Island of Tenerife. The park is rich in wildlife and features many beautiful and dramatic walking trails. Anaga is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, complete with an informative visitor centre and the option to spend the night in a hostel or rural hotel within the park. In Anaga rural park there are trails to suit many different abilities, ranging from gentle walks to more challenging hikes.
Coastal Cliffs of Teno Country Park
Teno Country Park is located to the extreme north-west of the Island of Tenerife, by-passed by traffic and seemingly by time itself. This is one of Tenerife’s most beautiful nature areas, rich in ecological, scenic and cultural wealth due to its isolated position.
Teno offers a variety of landscapes including cliffs, islands and laurel forests. A popular walking route is in the hills above Garachico, whose harbour was filled in by a lava flow in the 18th century. This walk can take around 3-4 hours, is 5 miles long with climbs of approx. 350m.
