Despite being rather battle scarred from World War II and the Cold War, Berlin has transformed itself into a metropolis of culture and diversity and is fast becoming one of Europe’s most popular city break destinations.
Berlin has a fragile history and stark reminders of its turbulent past will surround you on almost every corner.
However, a vibrant nightlife, thriving cultural arts scene and cutting edge architecture sit quite harmoniously alongside the historical landmarks of darker times.
Berlin is a real melting pot of cultures old and new, past and present.
Ironically, many of Berlin’s top attractions are remnants of the city’s history and offer a fascinating insight into the political climate of that bygone era.
A must on your ‘to do’ list on a short break to the German capital is Checkpoint Charlie and The Berlin Wall Museum. This famous sentry post was the main border crossing over the Iron Curtain into East Berlin during the east/west division of the Cold War.
It has also been the setting for many an espionage novel and spy thriller movie.
Another of Berlin’s instantly recognisable landmarks is the mighty Brandenberg Gate.
Built in the late 1700s, it is the only surviving gate of Berlin despite being severely damaged during WW11.
In 1989, a peaceful revolution ended the Cold War, the Berlin Wall fell and East and West Germany were reunited.
Despite its complex significance, the gate today stands as a symbol of peace and reunification.
There’s much more to Berlin than simply memorials to its turbulent past and political war games.
Visitors can enjoy the vibrant café culture and numerous fabulous restaurants dishing up Germany’s exciting cuisine.
This beautiful city is a treasure trove for art lovers too.
A trip to Berlin would not be complete without a visit to Museum Island.
Located between the Spree River and Kupfergraben, the unique collection of galleries and museums with its five temple-like buildings, houses treasures from 6,000 years of human history.
Elevated to UNESCO World Heritage status in 1999, the complex is the centrepiece of the city’s museum network and houses some of Germany’s finest pieces of art.
May is a great month to visit as Berlin’s museums open in the evenings for later access to exhibitions and art collections so you can pack much more into your sightseeing diary!
