Fancy the Costa del Sol this summer but not the crowds?
The bustling resorts along Spain’s famous golden coast can get a little busy in high season but I recently discovered a little secret gem.
Much as I want to keep it to myself, it would be unfair not to share this fabulous resort with you.
Nerja, a pretty seaside town on the eastern tip of the Costa del Sol and just 50 kilometers from Malaga is my new ‘go-to’ spot in the Med for my fix of Spanish delights… Sun, sea, sand and serenity!
Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Sierra Almijara mountain range, Nerja offers stunning scenery as well as a tranquil, relaxed atmosphere. The vibe here is pretty chilled.
The narrow, winding streets of the Old Town remain largely unaffected by mass tourism and are typically Andalusian in character, with white washed houses, wrought iron balconies and flower-filled patios.
The centrepiece of this quaint town is the spectacular Balcon de Europa. This magnificent promenade has sweeping views of the Mediterranean and no holiday to Nerja would be complete without a photograph taken at this beautiful spot.
In the summer months, the promenade (Paseo Balcon de Europa) is at the heart of the action.
Here you will find a tempting choice of bars, cafes and restaurants. So much so, you may find it hard to leave.
Spending an afternoon in this corner of Nerja is the perfect pastime, just soaking up the atmosphere, enjoying the sunshine and sampling local wines and tapas.
However, if you can tear yourself away, there’s plenty to see and do in and around the region. A trip to the famous Nerja Caves (Cuevos de Nerja) is a must.
It is believed that the caves date back 20,000 years yet they were only discovered in 1959.
This expansive, spectacular site is a series of caverns stretching almost five kilometers and home to the world’s largest stalagmite.
There are some really good guided tours and some even combine lunch or dinner excursions…not to be missed!
Nerja is also well placed for excursions.
The historic city of Granada is worthy of a day away from the poolside and nearby Frigiliana is just beautiful.
It was once voted the prettiest village in Andalusia.
Regular buses run from the centre of Nerja or if you feel like a drive, hire a car and travel the short distance, taking in the lovely scenery en route.
If you simply want to enjoy your holiday without doing too much, there’s plenty of sun, sea and sangria to be found on Nerja’s great beaches.
Protected from the wind by the sheltering coves, the waters are tranquil and the golden sands a real suntrap.
Playa Burriana is probably the most famous of Nerja’s beaches and there’s always plenty going on.
Don’t forget to try eating at one of the beachfront restaurants where you can sample giant, sizzling paellas.
If a taste of Andalusia is making your mouth water, look no further.
