The Greek island of Kos is really where the past meets the present as ancient ruins sit happily alongside karaoke bars, restaurants and fabulous beach action. Rich in Greek and Roman antiquities too, the island’s architecture is a blend of Venetian and Ottoman styles with lots of interesting places to visit even if you’ve really only gone for a fortnight of sun, sea, sand and Sambuca!
Kos is only a short ferry ride away from Turkey and makes for an ideal day trip from the island.
Whether you want to party all night long or enjoy some rest and relaxation, the choice is yours.
This lush island is covered in vineyards and olive trees, all adding to the pretty scenery, yet Kos Town is packed with tavernas, clubs and pretty much all the fun you can handle.
The resort is definitely more suited to younger holidaymakers but still attracts all age groups.
On the northeast coast of Kos island, the town is a heady mix of old and new and caters well for tourists.
There’s plenty of dining options and you’ll be spoilt for choice if you want to ‘Go Greek’ and sample the delicious local fayre.
However, if you’re more of a fish and chips fan, you’ll find plenty of British grub on offer too.
The quieter resorts on the island such as Psalidi, Kefalos and Agios Fokas are more suited to families than 24-hour party people, although they are still within easy reach if you fancy a big night out on the tiles.
Arguably, the fabulous beaches of Kos are a big draw but you can add in some great activities, to add some fun and culture to your holiday.
Here are some of the best things to do on Kos:
A Day at the Museum, anyone?
Kos Folklore Museum & and Kos Archeological Museum are some of the most interesting places to visit, offering a glimpse of life on Kos through the ages.
Dancing in The Streets
The famous Hippocrates Festival takes place during July and August. This great cultural event features art exhibitions, music, theatre and street dancing and a must for summer holidaymakers and locals alike.
Hot Springs Eternal
Why not take a revitalizing dip in the hot springs at Thermes, near Psalidi. Warm bubbles rise from cracks in the seabed to create a natural hot spring.
Island hopping
Take a boat trip over to neighbouring island of Crete and spend a day exploring the exciting city of Heraklion.
Doctor! Doctor!
A must see on Kos is the ancient site and ruins of Asclepion, built in 357 BC in honour of the God of health and medicine, Asclepios and thought to be the world’s first hospital.
If you fancy some fun among the ruins this summer then look no further.
