There’s nothing more picturesque than seeing yachts with colourful sails gently make their way across mirror-like waters, but the scene is even more beautiful when viewed from onboard the yachts.
If sailing is something you’ve always had a hankering to try, then this Saturday, April 25, drop anchor at the Loch of Skene, close to the village of Kirkton of Skene, which is around nine miles west of Aberdeen.
The loch is the venue for Aberdeen and Stonehaven Yacht Club’s open day, which is open to beginners and experienced sailors. Visitors can view the club’s facilities, enjoy a trip along the loch on a rescue RIB and, depending on the weather, sail on the loch. The club is a Dinghy Racing Club and suitable for all ages and abilities. Those going along are asked to bring warm clothes and waterproofs and, if they have it, a wet suit.
Aberdeen and Stonehaven Yacht Club has been sailing at Loch of Skene and Stonehaven for more than 50 years and sails at the loch between March and the end of May before moving to its clubhouse on Shorehead, Stonehaven, for June till the end of the sailing season in October/November.
There are races round the buoys on Wednesday evenings, Saturdays and Sundays and many sailors go on to compete nationally and internationally.
As well as being able to chat to members about the fun and pleasure of being a member of the club. there will be a barbecue and food provided. The free open day runs from 10am-5pm and parking is available at the estate gatehouse on the A944.
