A man who committed suicide in a Moray street was a 26-year-old who stood trial for murder five years ago.
Daniel McArthur’s body was discovered on a pavement in Elgin’s Thornhill Road.
Police said yesterday and investigation into his death was ongoing but there did not appear to be any suspicious circumstances.
It is understood he died from self-inflicted injuries.
In 2010 Mr McArthur was charged with murder and attempted murder following a huge fight in Elgin’s Lesmurdie Road and a separate incident near Aberdeen.
Stephen Johnston, a 37-year-old labourer and father-of-six, was fatally injured during the brawl.
Irish-born Mr Johnston, of Lossiemouth, had been part of a gang responsible for flooding Moray with drugs.
Mr McArthur was among four men accused of killing him by hitting him with a knife, metal bars, baseball bats, golf clubs, wood, fence posts, hammers and a “For sale” sign.
The four men were also charged with attempting to murder Derek Simpson at Blackburn, near Aberdeen.
But during their trial at the High Court in Edinburgh, the murder charge against Mr McArthur was dropped.
He admitted striking Mr Simpson on the body with a knife to his severe injury and to the danger of his life and was detained for three years and six months.
Yesterday, friends took to social media to pay tribute to Mr McArthur, who lived in the New Elgin area.
Danny Lyons said: “A friend to so many. A hero to me. Rest in peace.”
Alison Donald said Mr McArthur’s death had caused “a lot of sore hearts”.
Officers were called to reports of a “sudden death” on Monday evening, and cordoned-off Thornhill Road from Robertson Drive to the A941 road to Rothes.
Inspector Graeme Allan said: “Inquiries are ongoing, however early indications suggest there are no suspicious circumstances.
“We are treating this as an isolated incident, there was no threat to the public at any stage.
“I thank those who live in the area for their patience while the incident was dealt with overnight, and also for their assistance and information provided.
“As with all sudden deaths, a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.”
