The animals may go in two by two on Noah’s Ark but it’s one at a time at the yearly weigh-in at London Zoo.
From big cats to tiny frogs, keepers spend hours each year recording every animal’s vital statistics, enabling them to keep a close check on their overall well-being.
Responsible for more than 19,000 animals, ZSL London Zoo’s keepers often have to come up with innovative ways of encouraging the animals to be weighed and measured, from training tigers to stand up against a glass window to walking a camel onto hidden weigh bars in exchange for a treat.
The measurements are then recorded into the Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS), where they are shared with zoos across the world, and used to compare information on thousands of endangered species.
