While Paris is famous for its “love locks” bridge, the Highlands has its own declaration of love that is a favourite with tourists.
Those who drive along the road into Ullapool will be familiar with a particular sight – that of the roadside romantic gesture of “Del hearts Kelly”.
It has been the unofficial welcome home sign to many that live in or visit the north-west village but the identity of these two lovers still remains a mystery.
There have been stories of it simply being a road worker using up surplus white line paint but other local legends have circulated over the years. None have answered the questions – who are these sweethearts and do they still ‘heart’ each other?
So it came as a surprise to many when the iconic wording seemed to disappear last week. It was believed the artwork was removed to tidy up the popular tourist route and many expressed some sadness to see it go.
But an anonymous artist has taken it upon themselves to restore the wording to the A835 coming down the hill from Braemore – continuing the legend of these two lovers.
While their identities and true story remain unknown, in a little part of Wester Ross, Del still loves Kelly.
