Moray residents have been invited to learn more about the life of the region’s firefighters during an upcoming doors open day.
Staff at Elgin’s fire station have encouraged visitors to attend the Wards Road depot next Saturday, September 17, to investigate its range of lifesaving equipment.
Crew manager Gareth Luce is overseeing the service’s preparations for the event, and said he was eager to offer visitors a more rounded view of what the career of a firefighter entails.
He added: “People see us out in public working, but they don’t get to see what happens from nine to five in the station – and the training and administration that goes into the job.
“We will show people around the different appliances here, and explain how and when we use them.”
Mr Luce added that volunteers would remain on standby to guide visitors around should the firefighters be called to attend an emergency.
Buildings across the region are taking part in next weekend’s event, with 16 lined up to throw open their doors to the public free of charge.
People can roam around some of Elgin’s oldest properties, such as the 19th century Anderson’s Care Home and the Greyfriars Convent, the latter of which was founded in 1479.
St Giles Church and Elgin Sheriff Court will also take part in the programme. And the Findhorn Ice House and Heritage Centre will invite visitors into its underground chambers to see how salmon was stored 150 years ago.
Elsewhere, the group that runs Lossiemouth’s Covesea lighthouse will offer tours around the venue.
The project has been organised by the Elgin Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme and the local authority.
