Laura Elizabeth Patrick, 32, creates bespoke calligraphy for brides who want to add that special touch to their big day.
Her style is reminiscent of times gone by and she can design bespoke stationery to suit your theme.
Why have you chosen to work in a creative field?
I’ve always been a creative sort. As a child I was always doodling and coming up with art projects.
I studied fashion and design with business at university and after deciding that fashion wasn’t for me, I tried some other creative outlets including illustration, design and photography.
Have you always wanted to do calligraphy?
I’ve always been searching for the creative outlet I felt most confident and indeed passionate about, and feel lucky to have found two in calligraphy and photography.
How have you developed your skills?
A lot has been practice and self teaching, however I did some online training in both and have attended a few workshops.
Why have you chosen to get into the wedding market?
It is so much more creative than it used to be and people are really keen to style their whole day.
There are so many options to add beautiful calligraphy touches to the day and indeed opportunities for gorgeous images.
Have you ever had any strange requests?
I’ve had a few – like Willy Wonka themed wedding favours.
How do you calm a nervous bride?
Breathe, and remember the most important part of the wedding should be celebrating your love for each other, not whether everything is perfect.
Have you got a favourite design?
I have a favourite calligraphy script which is very organic and bouncy and a joy to write.
Why should a couple choose calligraphy for the wedding invites and tags?
Calligraphy adds a special handmade element which really draws people in. Whilst I love type and print there’s something that sets a hand penned item apart by miles.
Who would be your dream client?
I’d love to do the calligraphy for a celebrity event like an awards show or fashion event, but then again I also love working with creative couples who would let me go to town with lots of calligraphy detailing.
What would be your dream wedding?
I’ll be honest I’ve never even thought about this one. However, now you ask, a ceremony somewhere cosy and intimate, me wearing something comfortable and classy with a vintage touch and lots of gorgeous styling – think little lights and calligraphy details.
I’d love a glorious chocolate cake and of course a lovely guy to call my husband which to me would be the most important part.
