Ten-year-old Phiona Mutesi sells maize on the busy streets of Kampala to make enough money to keep a roof over the heads of her family. By chance, she meets Robert, head of a programme which supplies porridge to local children as they learn to play chess. Robert mentors Phiona and inspires the girl to compete at the World Chess Olympiad in Russia.
