This year saw the release of some huge games – Battlefield 1 was a highlight for many people, as was Gears Of War 4, while Doom, Tom Clancy’s The Division and, of course, Ratchet And Clank all deserve a mention.
Fifa 17 took things to another level with The Journey, while a supposedly infinite game was thrust upon us in No Man’s Sky, and we can’t forget about Titanfall 2.
But 2017 is expected to be another year of big releases – here are a few we’re especially looking forward to.
1. The Last Of Us Part II
Are you mad?! There’s a sequel! The assumption had been that we’d never get a sequel to The Last Of Us, instead maybe an underwhelming film would be released and that would be that. And to be honest, the original’s storyline was so perfect we wouldn’t have minded all that much.
That was until we saw the trailer. Chills.
Sorry to all the Xbox players, this is one you’ll be missing out on, but PlayStation users shouldn’t hold their breath either – there might be a long wait for this one.
2. Mass Effect: Andromeda
If you’re new to the Mass Effect universe you’d be joining at a good time if you chose Andromeda as your entry point, given that this is the first in the series to feature an open-world environment.
The game is set 600 years on from the events in the third instalment, with a “more youthful” and “adventurous” storyline, according to Gamespot. And if you’re a fan of Destiny, there’s good news – Mass Effect’s combat mechanics were inspired by that game.
This one’s been winning awards for the most anticipated game, and with good reason.
3. South Park: The Fractured But Whole
Another game with high expectations is the sequel to South Park’s 2014 game The Stick Of Truth.
The Fractured But Whole is essentially a superhero game with South Park characters, the likes of which we’ve seen in the Coon and Friends episodes, and the first trailer reveals the source of tension in the game – Cartman, obviously. The kids can’t decide on how to start their superhero franchise, and civil war breaks out.
This one looks hilarious.
4. Death Stranding
We’ll start with a disclaimer: there’s no telling when this one is out, and anyone claiming to have knowledge about what this game actually entails is lying.
The game is hugely anticipated, being the legendary Kojima Productions’ first game since splitting from Sony. It definitely looks very trippy.
Norman Reedus, from The Walking Dead, stars in the game, as does Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen. Regardless of what this game is actually about, it definitely looks different to anything we’ve played before, and for that reason alone we’re excited.
5. Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands
The tenth instalment in the Tom Clancy franchise is also the first that sees a Ghost Recon edition with an open universe.
The game, set in Bolivia, which in this fictional world has become the world’s largest producer of cocaine, sees the Ghosts deployed by the US Army to take down the Santa Blanca cartel and expose corruption in the government.
It’s not just an enticing storyline though – if you’ve grown used to Ubisoft’s epic open world games, such as the Far Cry and Assassin’s Creed series, be prepared for something special: the developer says Wildlands will be its biggest ever open-world environment.
6. Tekken 7
Nothing will ever be as good as the original Tekken games on the original PlayStation, but we’re not going to say no to an update.
And who’s that we spy in the trailer? Akuma?? In a non-Street Fighter crossover edition of Tekken? How interesting.
Other new characters have also been introduced, and the old classics will be returning for what the trailer dubs “the final showdown”.
7. Horizon Zero Dawn
This one won best original game at the Game Critics Awards two years running, so it’s fair to say there’s a lot expected.
In a world after this civilisation has ended, the gamer controls Aloy, a hunter and archer in a world run by robots. It looks stunning, but it’s also very dangerous.
Answers to how the robots took over need to be found, while mysteries of the previous civilisation and its demise must also be discovered. It looks like somewhere you could get lost for days.
8. Crash Bandicoot Remastered
Countless hours were lost playing Crash Bandicoot on PlayStation and PlayStation 2, and now our furry friend is back on the next gen of consoles.
The classic villains and sounds are back, and we cannot wait to leave our enemies spinning.
9. Red Dead Redemption 2
Not an awful lot is known about the Red Dead Redemption sequel yet, but that didn’t stop fans being sent into a frenzy when Rockstar dropped the trailer at the back end of 2016.
We’re back in the Old West, with more cowboys in utterly stunning settings. If you never played the first game and, having watched the trailer, are wondering what all the fuss is about – trust us, you don’t want to miss out again.
10. Resident Evil VII Biohazard
If you need something to scare you to your core, look no further – especially if you plan on or have already invested in PlayStation VR.
Even if you haven’t, play this game alone one evening with the volume on loud and you will be terrified. And of course you can expect the puzzles and combat that usually come with a Resident Evil game.
11. For Honor
Vikings, samurai and knights – if the trailer hadn’t already showed you, it’s pretty clear this is going to be an epic combat game.
The storyline possibilities in this one are just as exciting as the multiplayer experience is expected to be – and For Honor definitely seems like it will be the most brutal game of 2017.
12. Gran Turismo Sport
Remember how much fun Gran Turismo was even just racing against people you knew, in your front room? Now you’ll be able to compete with people all around the world, representing your country or favourite manufacturer, in online championships actually certified by the highest body of international motorsports, the FIA.
The more you race, and win, the stronger your legacy becomes.
And, it goes without saying, this PS4 exclusive looks incredible.
13. Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild
The latest instalment from the classic Zelda series will be huge not just because it’s another Zelda, but because it’s being released on Nintendo’s new console, the Switch.
Watch Jimmy Fallon get a go on it above and just imagine the possibilities.
You can pre-order that one on the Wii U here, but pre-orders on the Switch will have to wait.
