A woman who has thrown herself into Tiree community life since falling in love with the island 28 years ago has been honoured for her contribution.
Margaret Worsley said she was “surprised and delighted” to be awarded a British Empire Medal.
The 45-year-old works full time as an outreach worker for the Cùram Thiriodh charity, running regular activities such as a lunch club and minibus outings.
And even when she has some time to herself, she is always braced to drop everything to rush to an emergency call-out as the longest-serving member of the team of volunteer firefighters.
A native of Derbyshire, Ms Worsley took a holiday in Tiree while visiting her parents who had a business in the area – and never left.
She is looking forward to celebrating her gong with the community – and trying to work out who nominated her for the honour.
“It’s a very close-knit community,” she said. “You know you can always count on your neighbours.
“The only person I’ve told so far is my sister – I wanted to be sure it wasn’t a joke.
“It will be nice to be able to share the news with the rest of the family and everyone here.
“I really don’t know who nominated me. The chances of me finding out are probably very slim.”
The stalwart said she hoped more of the often-isolated older people on the island would start to take advantage of the Resource Club.
This year’s annual day trip off the island saw her take the charity’s minibus to the Five Sisters Zoo – a very popular jaunt.
