A man has died after taking ill at the wheel in Stornoway.

The victim, named locally yesterday as Brian Gillen, was rushed to Western Isles Hospital after the accident on Wednesday evening.

The 54-year-old died in the early hours of Thursday morning at the hospital.

He was involved in a collision with another car but his death is understood to be as a result of a medical episode rather than the road accident.

Mr Gillen is understood to have worked as a chef in various businesses around the Stornoway area, including a spell working on the CalMac ferry Isle of Lewis.

He lived in the Laxdale area near Stornoway.

It is understood Mr Gillen was not originally from Lewis but had lived on the island for several years.

He is believed to have been married ot the editor of the local newspaper.

He had been driving a red Renault Clio when the incident happened near the Napier Hill junction, close to Western Isles Hospital, around 4.20pm on Wednesday.

Mr Gillen’s vehicle was involved in a collision with a silver Mercedes taxi.

The taxi driver was also taken to hospital but was later released without serious injury.

It is understood he attempted to help Mr Gillen before the arrival of the emergency services.

No passengers were in the taxi.

The Clio came to rest at the side of the road, with the taxi partly on the pavement.

Police Scotland appealed for anyone who witnessed the collision to contact police on 101 or call in at Stornoway police station

The road was closed while emergency services worked at the scene.

Later, traffic was allowed through in single file.

Police officers and the local traffic warden were on scene to control traffic flow.

Mr Gillen’s car was later recovered after emergency services had finished working at the scene.
