Checks after Stornoway street light crashes in high winds

Western Isles Council is checking all lamp posts in a Stornoway suburb after a street light came crashing down in high winds.
The LED light tower toppled across the roadway smashing glass and debris over Goathill Road near the High Church.
It was later disconnected and removed to avoid electrocuting anyone.
A council spokesman said: “The damage to the lamp post was as a result of the high winds.
“The post was found to have been corroded at the base level and we are currently inspecting other posts in the vicinity to ensure there is no risk of a repeat.”
The incident occurred during a gale on Tuesday.
Strong winds continue to affect the islands and Cal Mac warns of potential ferry cancellations today.
The inter-island Sound of Harris route is likely to face disruption when ferries between Skye, Harris and North Uist may suspend sailings.
