Repairs will be carried out to the roof of an island secondary school after it collapsed.
A glass roof pane fell and shattered in the atrium of Stromness Academy last year, just minutes after pupils were sent home for the day.
Now Orkney Islands Council (OIC) has awarded a contract for a major project to replace the roof in the foyer area entirely.
The work will be carried out over the school summer holidays between July 5 and August 21 at a cost of between £150,000 and £200,000.
Kirkwall firm R Clouson Ltd has won the contract for the scheme.
It will involve removing the existing roof glazing and replacing it with a new energy efficient material.
The work has been long planned – but this phase has been brought forward after the incident last summer.
James Wylie, OIC’s head of education and improvement, said: “A substantial planned programme of refurbishment work is underway Stromness Academy which will, among other benefits, increase the energy efficiency of the building.
“The phase involving the replacement of the glass roof over the entrance foyer has been brought forward following the incident last August where a pain of glass shattered and fell to the ground after school hours.
“The aim is to start the work in the summer and it is hoped that most of it will be completed during the holidays to minimise any disruption to the school.”
At the time of last summer’s incident, the council suggested that a “sudden and unusual” rise in temperature may have caused the glass to shatter.
This has never been established for definite but, as a precaution, a protective membrane was put in place around the other panels to stop them from falling if they were to brake.
This membrane will be removed during the upgrade works, while new blinds and other infrastructure will be fitted.
