A north-east primary school has received a welcome boost of almost £3,000 which they plan to spend on a new educational garden.
Bryan Mills, whose son attends St Andrew’s school in Inverurie took part in what was his “first and last” marathon this year raising £1,360.
Pupils at the school decided to show their support for the energetic father by organising their own sponsored walk around nearby Kellands Park which mirrored the route of the dad’s London marathon challenge.
That raised a further £1,600.
Now the funds have been handed over and the school has arranged for a polytunnel to be erected during the summer holidays.
Kintore Rotarians have stepped up to help out.
Irene Bolda is the vice-chairwoman of friends of St Andrew’s School and explained that the polytunnel would be accessible to all, she said: “We will have raised beds and a wide walk way so wheelchairs will be able to go through and the children will also be able to reach the plants.
“We hope they will gain a better understanding of where their food comes from and can see it growing from seed to the plate – for snack time.”
One pupil, Paul Laats was on hand to receive the cheque and he was looking forward to getting his hands dirty in the polytunnel after the summer holidays, he said: “It’s great.”
Mr Mills said he had no plans to repeat his marathon fundraiser, which he completed in just over five hours.
St Andrew’s School is set to move into the new Inverurie Community Campus once it is completed, but Mrs Kennedy reassured by saying the polytunnel will be “fully transportable” and will be relocated with them.
