Thieves have helped themselves to the contents of a donations box at a popular eagle observatory in the Outer Hebrides.
The observatory, a key project by the community landlord North Harris Trust, lies on a hilltop around seven miles north of Tarbert and is one of few locations in Scotland where the iconic golden eagle can be seen on a regular basis.
Since it opened in 2012, it has proved a hit with visitors, particularly nature lovers, helping to put the wildlife of Harris firmly on the tourist map.
The publicly-funded facility was essentially free of charge, but the trust placed a donations box nearby to help them with the upkeep and maintenance.
But now the little income they drive from that has disappeared.
A complaint of alleged theft has now been made to police.
A spokesman for the trust said: “When the ranger turned up at the eagle observatory this morning for the weekly eagle watch, he discovered that the donations box in the observatory had been broken into and the all the money stolen.
“It is regretable that this fantastic facility which is largely maintained by donations attracted the attention of theives.”
The trust has asked that anyone with any information contact them on 01859502222.
