The Kessock lifeboat was launched at around 10.30pm on Friday night after reports of a flare being set off in the Fortrose area.
A coastguard spokesman confirmed they were had investigated for two hours but were stood down at 12.45am after “nothing was found”.
Police officers were also there in a supporting role to “check areas of interest”.
It followed earlier callouts in Aberdeen where two lifeboats and three coastguard teams were called out after receiving “multiple” reports of an emergency flare being fired somewhere in the Bridge of Don area.
A spokesman for Aberdeen coastguard said that an “extensive search” of the area had been carried out by crews from Aberdeen, Cruden Bay and Stonehaven. He said: “We have had multiple reports of a flare being seen in the Bridge of Don area with one suggesting a second flare being fired over the sea.
“We called out coastguard rescue crews from Aberdeen, Cruden Bay and Stonehaven and two lifeboats from Aberdeen at 7.55pm on Friday.
“They carried out a sea search from the Aberdeen harbour mouth up to Blackdog and then worked their way south. The coastguard also carried out a land search of the coastal path and up the River Don.”
A spokesman for Aberdeen’s RNLI said: “Crews searched the area but found no evidence of vessels or persons in distress. They were stood down and returned to Aberdeen Lifeboat Station in readiness for further service at around 10pm.”
