A man jailed for historical sex offences in England had spent time working as a school bus driver on Skye.
Roger Cook, 50, was yesterday jailed for four years at Carlisle Crown Court. He had worked on the bus between Staffin and Portree High School.
Skye councillor Calum MacLeod said: “We really need the authorities to investigate this man to ensure no harm has come to anyone else.
“We need to give an assurance to the community that nothing has happened to any child while he has been here. As a father it is appalling to think someone like that is in your community, let alone working on a school bus.”
Skye MSP Kate Forbes said: “It will cause concern. Obviously, if anybody saw, heard or experienced anything suspicious, I would encourage them to report it to the police immediately.”
Grandmother Isobel MacDonald, a neighbour of Cook and a member of Staffin Community Council, said: “It is scary thinking he was living here and driving the bus. It is great news he was jailed.”
Cook, who had until recently stayed at Trotternish Avenue, previously admitted indecently assaulting a young teenager on three occasions in the Appleby area of Cumbria in 1999 and 2000.
Jon Close, defending, said Cook had suffered from a personality disorder. Cook must sign the sex offenders register for an indefinite period.
The duration of his employment as a bus driver on Skye was prior to his conviction, so would not have appeared on any checks. A spokesperson for Stagecoach North Scotland said: “Our policy is that school bus drivers are employed subject to enhanced Disclosure Scotland checks.”
The company pointed out the driver had not worked for Stagecoach for at least a year and during his time they had received no complaints about his behaviour.
Detective Constable Adam Braniff, of North Cumbria CID, said: “Roger Cook is a sexual predator who isolated his victim in order to carry out his attacks.”
