Thousands of women on Orkney are being encouraged to attend a mobile breast screening service when it arrives on the islands.
Nearly 3400 women aged between 50 and 70 on Monday, April 9, are set to get screened for breast cancer.
The call is particularly important as the Breast Screening Service comes to Orkney only every three years.
The Unit will be based at Balfour Hospital in the Macmillan Ward Car Park for about five months.
Typically it has experienced one of the highest uptakes in the country as on the last visit in 2015 a total of 84% of eligible women came along.
Dr Gerald Lip, clinical director for the north east of Scotland Breast Screening Service, said: “Women between the ages of 50 and 70 years who are registered with a GP Practice will receive an invitation for screening.”
“Women 71 years and over will not automatically be sent an invitation but they are encouraged to make their own appointment by phoning us in Aberdeen.”
“If any woman missed or failed to attend three years ago it is still important to come along for screening this time.”
Dr Louise Wilson, at NHS Orkney encouraged all women to attend their appointment.
She said: “Detecting cancer early provides the best chance of successful treatment. In 2015 there were 37 patients diagnosed with breast cancer that was detected through breast screening.”
