The Press and Journal has been named the UK Regional Daily Newspaper of the Year at a prestigious national awards ceremony.

The title was recognised at the Newsawards 2018, which was held at the Lancaster London Hotel, London on Wednesday.

The awards celebrate both the quality of content and quality of printing and production of the entrants. Three consecutive copies from earlier this year were entered and The Press and Journal was nominated alongside the East Anglian Daily Times, News & Star (West Cumbria), The Courier, The Irish News and The Yorkshire Post.

Judges commended the P&J for its “stunning print quality, exemplary news service, neat design and eye-catching pages”.

Richard Neville, Editor in Chief of Morning Newspapers for DC Thomson Media, said: “I’m absolutely delighted The Press and Journal has been named Regional Daily Newspaper of the Year. To win an award like this is testament to the team that work so hard on the paper every day.

“The Press and Journal is the highest selling regional daily in the UK and our readers continue to enjoy the work that is put in to producing what is now officially the best Regional Daily Newspaper in the UK.”

Gary Cullum, director of the awards, said: “News brands at national and local level remain the powerhouse for news provision in the UK, setting agendas, forcing change, holding those in power to account and keeping politicians on their toes; while at the same time entertaining and informing their audiences.

“All the winners and finalists of Newsawards 2018 play a fundamental role in delivering to readers and advertisers a highly trusted and relevant medium that drives real action.”

Meanwhile, the P&J has also been shortlisted in the UK Regional Press Awards, another scheme which celebrates excellence in local journalism.

The title has been nominated for UK Regional Paper of the Year and weekend magazine YL is in the running Supplement of the Year. The winners will be announced in May.
