Pupils from Portree, Staffin and Kilmuir Primary Schools have been exploring sites of historical interest on Skye, with the help of local historians, writers and artists.
The project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, has seen pupils visit sites such as Duntulm Castle and bay, An Corran, Rigg, and Brothers’ Point over the past year under the expert guidance of Dugie Ross of Staffin museum.
Experts from the Trotternish community, Mary Ann MacDonald, Annie Nicolson, Catherine Budge, Janet Lamont and Donald MacLeod visited the schools where informal ‘ceilidhs’ took place with pupils covering a range of topics linked to the sites they visited.
To celebrate all the different elements of the project, Balmacara-born animator Iain Craig worked with the children to produce stop-motion animation films with simple technology.
Mr Craig said: “This has been a lovely project to work on, and pupils certainly rose to the challenge of putting together fun, creative short stories. It was brilliant to see such variety coming through in storyboards.
“There is no shortage of talent in the classes I visited and I’m confident we’ll see some of the young people involved producing their own films in the future.”
Incorporating creative writing and visual arts, the project also included the involvement of writer Donald S Murray and local artists Lorraine Scott Nolan and James Newton Adams allowing for children to develop their imagery of the project.
The project was managed and run by Cleas, a local charity and arts organisation, in association with The Aros Centre, Staffin Community Trust and Cannan Graphic Studies, based at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig.
