Shetland residents, businesses and landowners are being encouraged to consider signing up to the Rural Watch Scotland initiative.
Lerwick police officers have recently been trained in the Neighbourhood Alert Community Messaging System run by Rural Watch Scotland, which is an extension of Neighbourhood Watch Scotland.
This system allows those trained to have access to the full Scottish Neighbourhood Alert database which allows an inclusive and locally adaptable approach to supporting rural and urban communities, helping them feel safer and work effectively together with partner agencies.
The system provides a means of targeted and localised messaging on issues of crime, safety and resilience.
Constable Carole Smith said: “Alerts can vary in context and they can be used to inform those who have registered about unexpected road closures, scams, bogus workmen and other instances of rural crime.
“The alerts are sent via email and/or text and if the matter is of an urgent nature they can be sent by voicemail. They can be sent out geographically or demographically as required.
“It allows residents, farmers and landowners to receive updates and crime prevention advice to prevent them from becoming a victim.
“I would encourage people in Shetland to register online at www.ruralwatchscotland.co.uk and follow the instructions in order to receive these updates.”
