A Western Isles motorist who killed a woman by careless driving has been spared a prison sentence.
Caroline Mackay, of Moorfield, Newmarket, Lewis, was given a four year driving ban and a community payback order for the offence when she was sentenced at Stornoway Sheriff Court.
The 22-year-old administrative assistant with her father’s building firm, CalMax Construction, previously pleaded guilty to driving at excessive speed for the nature and condition of the road.
Her BMW went out of control and hit a Mini in which health worker Karin Prior was a passenger.
Ms Prior, a children’s occupational therapist, suffered serious head injuries in the collision at Newmarket about two miles outside Stornoway, on Monday 20 August 2012 at around 3pm.
Ms Prior, 51, of Gallan Beag, Aird, Uig, died at the Western Isles Hospital – where she worked – a few hours after the crash.
She left a daughter Becky Hindson, who was 12 at the time of the accident.
Sheriff David Sutherland said: “This is a tragic case with the consequences devastating for many people,” including a young girl losing her mum.
On top of the driving ban, the sheriff imposed a two year community payback order including 250 hours of unpaid community service work to be completed by next May.
