The future of the Lewis and Harris auction mart has been secured after a large turnout to an emergency general meeting.
Over 40 concerned local crofters turned up for the event, which had been organised to address a shortage of volunteers for the local organising committee.
The facility provides a service to the area’s crofters and farmers who without it would face having to transport their animals to the mainland for sale.
The problem arose after a key member of the organising committee decided to step down after years of service and, at first, no-one was willing to come forward to assume the crucial responsibilities of secretary and sale co-ordinator.
However, that was addressed at the EGM when a number of new volunteers were willing to put themselves forward to help share in the responsibilities of running the mart.
Committee chairman Kenny MacLeod said that attendance to the meeting was better than they had anticipated and it meant the mart could continue to operate into the future. The first of the autumn lamb sales is due to be held in just six weeks’ time.
