Once named as the most unsafe road in Britain, the A889 Laggan to Dalwhinnie has attracted the attention of the government minister, whose officials will visit next month.
Transport Scotland officials are set to come to Laggan to meet with representatives from the community and discuss the perilous state of the road, after Kate Forbes MSP secured a meeting.
Back in 2002 ,The European Road Assessment Programme (EuroRAP) used a calculation which compared the number of serious and fatal accidents with the volume of road traffic, found that the A889, a remote eight-mile single carriageway, was by far the worst accident stretch in Britain.
Yesterday, it was confirmed that a round table discussion involving residents and the MSP will take place in the Badenoch village hall on the afternoon of Monday, March 11.
The half-mile stretch from Coldair coffee shop to the road end at the A86 has effectively been reduced to single track because of the road surface and the traffic cones on it to prevent motorists hitting the worst potholes.
Ms Forbes said: “I am pleased to have secured a meeting with Transport Scotland officials who will come up to Laggan to listen and hopefully better understand the serious impact the A889 is having upon local residents and other drivers.
“For many months now, the Laggan community have repeatedly raised the awful state of the A889 with me. The section from the Coldair coffee shop to the A86 is particularly bad, and is in dire need of repair.
“I hope Transport Scotland will listen to these concerns and next month’s meeting will prove to be the catalyst for improvements.”
Visitors to the area still come to see the stunning scenery featured he hit BBC drama series Monarch of the Glen was set in the Scottish Highlands in fictitious Glenbogle with much of the filming done in Laggan and the surrounding area.
