Members of the bomb squad were last night called to a house in the Western Isles after a suspect device was found within a property.
A house near the slipway in the crofting village of Breasclete on the west coast of Lewis was at the centre of the police activity.
An explosive ordnance disposal unit was expected to arrive off the CalMac ferry, MV Loch Seaforth, from the mainland.
A Police Scotland spokesman said last night: “Officers are currently in attendance at an address in Breasclete after an unidentified device was found within a property on Monday.
“Specialist support has been requested from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit.”
Chief Inspector Ian Graham said “a small number of properties” required to be evacuated while the incident was dealt with.
“This is entirely as a precaution and there is nothing to suggest there is any threat to the public,” he said.
“I would like to thank those affected for their patience.”
