Police have been carrying out a foreign driver initiative throughout the Lochaber area during the past week.
Officers have been talking to drivers of cars, heavy goods vehicles and motorcyclists as part of a campaign, recently launched by Road Safety Scotland in partnership with Police Scotland.
Road Policing constable Shaun Knox said: “The Highlands attract a huge number of tourists, and numbers peak between May and September. This initiative was aimed at educating foreign drivers and was in partnership with Road Safety Scotland and various vehicle hire companies.
“Throughout the week we carried out mobile patrols covering all of our trunk roads and frequent roadside checks, many of the drivers found that the information we provided was helpful and will assist within them driving safely.
“As part of the initiative drivers were issued with driving in Scotland leaflets, wrist bands and clear window directional stickers reminding them to drive on the left.
“Throughout the Lochaber area we detected offences ranging from careless driving, no insurance and speeding offences.
“One driver was arrested following a dangerous driving offence and appeared at Fort William Sheriff Court, where the driver received a fine and a UK driving disqualification.
“We will continue to focus on foreign drivers throughout the season and encourage people be patient and to allow extra time during their journeys with the expectation of heavier and more slower moving traffic.”
