Two youngsters from the Western Isles have been given the royal seal of approval after completing an awards scheme.
Students Tanya Mackay and Angus Campbell attended a presentation in the gardens of Holyrood Palace in the country’s capital to receive their gold Duke of Edinburgh awards.
The pair were presented with their accolades by broadcaster and sports journalist Alison Walker, after sharing their experiences with The Earl of Forfar.
Miss Mackay said: “The Duke of Edinburgh experience has impacted me in numerous ways.
“As part of expeditions, the walks through Isle of Lewis and Harris hills have helped me develop skills in areas such as map and compass reading, and helped me gain self-confidence.
“The thing I enjoyed the most was being able to try out new activities such as Mua Thai and rugby, which I thoroughly enjoyed participating in.”
Mr Campbell said the experience has helped him land a job with one of the country’s leading ferry operators.
He said: “It’s a very rewarding experience as it’s a very desirable thing to have on your CV and I like to think my experience on it helped me get a new job with Caledonian MacBrayne.”
The awards scheme takes each participant 12 and 18 months to complete through hard work and dedication, and is widely acknowledged as the world’s leading achievement for young people.
Alice Murray, operations manager for Western Isles Council, said: “It was a lovely day to see both Tanya and Angus receive their gold awards after all their hard work, dedication and commitment.”
