Fun bike won’t break the bank

Fun bike won’t break the bank

What’s it all about?

At the opposite end of the motorcycle spectrum from the screaming superbikes is a collection of far more modest vehicles designed to fill the role of simple, cost-effective transport.

Honda’s MSX125 is a prime example of the breed. Without many bells or whistles, it concentrates on getting its rider from A to B without leaving a gaping hole in their finances or stirring up undue drama en route.

The MSX125 is an ideal first bike that is equally at home in the urban environment or let loose off road. It is relatively inexpensive and offers bags of fun. Honda is hoping that this bike will inspire the next generation of bike riders.

What does it cost?

Price is one of the major selling points of this diminutive Honda. It will retail at £2,600 which should see a lot of takers. There may be cheaper ways to get your hands on a new motorcycle, but few which will put you in possession of a product of the MSX125’s quality from a brand with Honda’s clout.

Of course, corners had to be cut to bring the MSX125 in at this price, and equipment levels are basic. They amount to an LCD digital dash with speedometer, twin trip meters, fuel gauge and clock. The design of the bike is exceptional and will appeal to the young’s sense of style. Being a Honda, you can also bank on the MSX125’s mechanicals standing the test of time.

How does it handle?

The 125cc engine is set up to bring exceptional fuel economy rather than extreme performance, but the lightness of this bike will ensure that it is lively and responsive to the throttle. Stopping duties are taken care of by a 220mm front disc with a dual-piston brake calliper along with a 190mm disc and single-piston calliper at the rear. The Honda MSX125 should make for a stylish and comfortable city commuter as well as a fun off-roader for the weekends.

Verdict

Honda has a proud history at the lower end of the motorcycle market with many of its models being the sector leaders over the years and this MSX125 looks to continue that tradition. The focus of the bike is quite rightly on minimising costs and it is reassuringly cheap both to buy and to run. That means that sacrifices had to be made with regard to performance and equipment, but these are small and, with its cool-looking design, the MSX125 doesn’t remind you of them too often. In general, it’s another highly competent effort from Honda and a great fun way of getting about on a budget. Honda looks to be on to another winner.
