Agreat deal of thought has gone into the design and layout of Tanglewood House.
It sits in an enviable position – on a stunning headland of picturesque Loch Broom – and has been built to take full advantage of its situation.
It has an intriguing curved layout that provides views over the loch on three sides – one reason why so many people who visit Tanglewood rave about it.
The house was completed in the early 1980s, having been under construction for several years, with current owner, Anne Holloway, opening it to guests in 1998 and offering bed and breakfast.
The house nestles in its beautiful surroundings, which include almost three acres of established gardens and grounds and a private beach.
Folklore has it that a small cave on the headland here was prepared to serve as a hideout for Bonnie Prince Charlie following the Jacobite defeat at the Battle of Culloden as it offered easy access to the Minch and thus the Atlantic if the prince needed to escape back to France.
The house has been lovingly built and has many hand-crafted features, including solid oak arch-topped doors with Loire chateau moulded designs, herringbone ceiling panelling, a striking curved staircase and hand-crafted kitchen units.
The accommodation comprises large entrance hallway with a bowed window, off which the drawing room, dining area and kitchen are located.
There is also a small library area and W/C to the left.
The drawing room has a large fireplace with an inset wood burning stove.
Other features include wooden ceiling beams and feature windows providing an abundance of natural light into the room.
A glass panel door from the drawing room leads to a cantilever staircase into the conservatory which offers views on two sides and has herringbone ceiling panelling, and an attractive exposed stone wall.
A door from the conservatory leads to the side garden while another leads to the basement which has bedrock outcrops stretching across the floor space and a large wine cellar and store.
The dining area is connected to the drawing room with a large arch and has ample room for a dining table and chairs making an ideal entertaining area.
French doors lead from the dining area to a terrace at the rear of the house.
The kitchen is well equipped and spacious with a separate utility room located off with ample space for washing machines and direct access into the double garage.
The house also comes with a self-contained apartment which can be accessed from the kitchen. A staircase rises to the en-suite bedroom, kitchenette area and storage room.
The first floor landing is spacious and light with four large windows providing views over the mature gardens to the front of the property.
The three en-suite bedrooms have been designed specifically to maximise the views of the loch to the rear.
The master bedroom is well proportioned and has a small balcony and en-suite large bathroom with separate shower cubicle.
There is also a large linen room that leads to a further store room – handy if the new owners want to offer B&B.
A spiral staircase rises to the upper level into a sitting area which in turn provides access to a further bedroom with an en-suite, a spacious walk in cupboard and an extensive storage area.
Outside, there is a double garage and driveway with plenty of space for several vehicles.
There’s also a bothy, boiler room, tool shed, heating oil tank store, a central archway with a small clock tower above and steps leading to a scenic clothes drying area.
The garden grounds are nicely landscaped, mainly laid to lawn with a variety of plants, shrubs, heather borders and trees.
A feature of the gardens is the south-westerly facing walled garden formed by a series of arched alcoves.
At the back of the house there is a terrace, accessed from the dining room, where there are panoramic views over Loch Broom towards Ullapool to be enjoyed.
There are paths through the mature trees and wild garden grounds all of which boast fabulous views of the sea loch and mountains beyond.
Tanglewood’s small rugged beaches are reached by a steep path down to the water and a boat can be moored in the bay.
While surrounded by an abundance of wildlife and natural beauty, the house is not isolated and is only a short walk from the village of Ullapool which has a host of amenities and facilities including banks, restaurants and public houses as well as a sports centre, tennis court and swimming pool.
The house also comes with planning consent for the erection of a two-bedroom cottage within the grounds.
