Aberdeen golfer Richie Ramsay reckons he could have broken 60 around St Andrews yesterday if he had managed to get the putter working.
The 30-year-old is on five-under-par 139 after following up Thursday’s score of 69 at Kingsbarns with a two-under 70 in calm conditions at the Old Course.
He said: “Today was incredibly frustrating as I was continuously missing putts.
“I could have shot 59 if I had been holing putts. It was flat calm, so the opportunity was there if you were hitting your wedges close and putting well. I hit my wedges okay but I didn’t hole any putts.
“It ended up being a simple two-under but you could probably have thrown it round in 69.”
American Peter Uihlein almost became the first player in European Tour history to shoot a sub-60 round but his eagle putt on his final hole at Kingsbarns missed by inches and he had to settle for a mere 12-under-par 60 instead to move two shots behind halfway leader Tom Lewis.
The 22-year-old Englishman is on 15-under-par 129 following scores of 64 at Kingsbarns and 65 at St Andrews but he will face a tougher test at Carnoustie today.
