Fireball smash kills biker and destroys vehicles

A motorcyclist was killed in a fireball smash on a notorious Highland road.

The accident, involving a bike and a car, happened just north of the Glencoe Ski Centre on the A82 Fort William to Dumbarton road.

Both vehicles caught fire and were destroyed.

The motorcyclist, who hasn’t yet been named, was the fourth person to die on the A82 this year. Police are appealing for witnesses.

A spokesman said the man was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which happened just after 11am on Saturday.

“The two occupants of the car sustained minor injury and were conveyed to the Belford Hospital in Fort William for treatment,” he added.

“The motorcyclist’s details will not be released until next of kin have been informed.”

The road was closed for about five hours while police carried out investigations, reopening fully at around 4pm.

A fire service spokeswoman said appliances from Kinlochleven and Fort William attended.

“Both the car and the motorbike were completely destroyed by fire,” she added. An ambulance service spokesman said a woman was taken to Belford Hospital suffering from chest injuries.

He said he could not comment on her condition yesterday, and he had no information on the other casualty.

Lochaber Councillor Andrew Baxter said it was tragic to hear of the death of another motorist on the A82.

“I was very sorry to hear that we’d had another fatal accident on this road,” he said.

“It’s always a sobering thing when these tragedies happen in this area and you feel desperately sorry for the people involved and their families.”

Four people have died in accidents on the A82 Fort William to Dumbarton road so far this year – including two motorcyclists – and there have been two other crashes in which bikers have been seriously injured.

Anyone with any information about the weekend smash is asked to call police on 101.
