Highland mothers are appealing for more women to come forward and help sick and premature babies by donating their breast milk.
Ross-shire mother Gemma Jolly, 32, had a tough start to breastfeeding her daughter Erin, now seven months, but is now donating her surplus milk to Scotland’s milk bank in Glasgow.
The service helps out mothers who are ill or under too much stress to produce milk and is vital in helping give sick and premature babies the best start in life.
She said: “I’m glad I persevered as I know the benefits breast milk provides to your baby. When my daughter was only a few weeks old I began thinking that I’d like to help others.
“Breast milk donation is becoming more popular now and the demands for the service are increasing daily. I’m proud to be part of this and to help raise awareness. It’s so easy to do and just a small amount of your time, and some freezer space, can make all the difference to one small baby and its parents.”
