Staggies road warning

Staggies road warning

Ross County manager Derek Adams has warned that breaking the Staggies’ away duck at winless Kilmarnock today will be far from easy.

The Dingwall men make the long haul down to Ayrshire after winning their last two home matches – against Aberdeen and Hearts. Yet they are still searching for a first victory on the road this term.

Kilmarnock have been beset by problems on and off the park with supporters’ protests and poor results on the pitch in a turbulent start to the season.

Adams does not believe the Rugby Park players will be adversely affected when the teams meet in Ayrshire today.

He said: “It is a difficult game this weekend as Kilmarnock are getting a bit of backing now from their supporters. They are backing the team and the players are showing their resilience as well.

“It is not easy. The problems with Kilmarnock are not over this coming year. The problems happened years and years ago and put them into the situation they are in today.

“It is difficult for the people in charge there just now. Kilmarnock have done really well over the years and they are steeped in tradition.

“I have always enjoyed going there. It is a fantastic pitch to play on and, hopefully, we can take the same form we showed at Motherwell into the game.

“We have played well away from home and not picked up as many points as we would have liked.

“The start of the season has been great and I am delighted with the way we have been able to pick up wins at home.

“Away from home we want to win games now.

“It would be a massive result if we were able to get that win. It would put us in a very good position.”

County will be without midfielder Alex Cooper (ankle injury), while forward Orhan Mustafi has recovered from a broken toe and is working his way back to full fitness.

Adams is pleased with the progress of his new signings as the Staggies look to move up the Premiership table.

He said: “Ben Gordon and Graham Carey have built up a good understanding and Carey is going to be a top player for us. Melvin de Leeuw has fitted in well and can score and create goals.”
