Many Scots are finding comfort from gardening during lockdown.
And now, a popular north-east radio station is celebrating the success of a blooming marvellous project which is inspiring people across the region.
Scots Radio launched its gardening spin-off ‘Grow Radio’ during the lockdown restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic earlier this year.
The move capitalised on a surge in interest in horticulture and the outdoors, with many people reaping the physical, mental and psychological rewards of spending time in their outdoor spaces.
Originally devised as a temporary venture, the project’s success has inspired Scots Radio creator Frieda Morrison and her team to extend the recording schedule until the end of the year – with plans already in place to bring it back in 2021.
She has been joined on the programme by ‘Heed Gairdener’ David Mitchell, a past curator at the Edinburgh Botanic Gardens and chairman of the Open Gardens Scheme; sound engineer Richie Werner from Edinburgh and production manager Andrew Davidson from Fraserburgh.
And, adding to their success, Grow Radio has just been nominated in the Scots Project of the Year category of the National Scots Language Awards which are organised by the organisation Hands Up For Trad.
Ms Morrison said: “During this time of uncertainty and unprecedented change, access to and improved understanding of our environment has never been more important.
“Grow Radio emerged in response to meet the need of individuals to help them enjoy their gardens and at the same time help and support individuals and communities find the health benefits of the garden both mentally and physically.
“We are now planting the seeds for a new season in 2021 – and we are encouraging our listeners to record their garden questions via the special ‘record button’ or email us.
Mr Mitchell added: “Reviewing the social media feedback around this evolving venture, it is clear that Grow Radio has played a valuable and appreciated role during the pandemic.
“It has provided practical advice, cultural enrichment as well as much-needed reassurance to a broad audience, both young and old.”
