Brora Rangers have been handed a massive boost ahead of today’s AJG Parcels North of Scotland Cup final against holders Nairn County at Grant Street, Inverness with news that winger Andrew Greig has signed a three-year extension to his existing contract.
The 21-year-old former Caley Thistle apprentice will now remain at Dudgeon Park until the end of the 2017-2018 season.
Brora have not won this trophy since 1990, a fact not lost on Cattachs captain Steven Mackay.
The 32-year-old midfielder said: “These are exactly the type of games we want to be involved in and it should be a great cup final against my old team.
“I had three very happy years at Station Park. I still keep in touch with the boys and they have picked up since their disappointing start to the season.
“Nairn are on a good run of form and their confidence is high but so is ours after our 3-0 Scottish Cup win at Cove. To captain Brora Rangers in a cup final success would be a huge achievement. It would be a very proud moment for me.”
Brora’s only absentee is former Nairn midfielder Dale Gillespie, who is recovering from a broken metatarsal.
Nairn captain Michael Morrison is suspended and will miss the final but County’s top scorer Conor Gethins believes the big central defender’s absence will not present too much of a problem.
Gethins said: “Obviously, big Mo gives us a physical presence in each box but Martin Macdonald, who has been missing in central defence for the last two weeks, will step in.
“In my eyes he is one of the best defenders in the Highland League.
“Brora will start as favourites because of their form over the last 12 weeks. They don’t know what it is like to lose but hopefully we can get the better of them.
“We’re the holders and we’re a better team than the one which faced Brora at the start of the season. We would love to retain our trophy. We know what we have to do and the boys are all hungry for success.”
