Aberdeen’s Jim and Glynn Geddie have been crowned 2013 European Supercar Challenge champions after securing the title in the last meeting of the season in Assen, Holland.
The father-and-son pairing, driving for United Autosports, finished seventh in the opening race of the final weekend – enough to seal the crown.
Glynn had earlier secured pole position for both races with impressive times in qualifying and continued to lead from the front before handing over the McLaren MP4-12C in first place to his father.
But he was forced to sit in the pits for 60 seconds to serve a success penalty, the maximum enforceable under championship regulations.
The Geddies’ closest challenge Jan Versluis, in his Ferrari 458, needed to win the race to apply pressure at the top.
But he could only finish third allowing Jim the luxury of taking his car home in a points scoring position and seventh was enough to clinch the title.
The victory for the father-and-son duo comes almost exactly two years after they won the British GT title in 2011.
Glynn is delighted to have added the European crown to this other major racing achievements and dedicated his win to close friend Sean Edwards, who died in a crash in Brisbane last week while a passenger in a testing session.
“It is such a great feeling to be Supercar Challenge champions and to share another championship win with my dad is even better,” said Glynn.
“I’m dedicating the win to Sean, who was sadly killed last week.
“The United Autosports team has done such a great job with the car to get us to this point.
“I’m looking forward to seeing what next year will bring now.”
Jim said: “To win the championship still with one race to go is an incredible achievement.
“I am thrilled for Glynn and myself to have won another championship together. It’s been tough at times during the season but we have proved ourselves again in the end.”
